It made it's way into many of the 80's Trek novels. It's my opinion that Star Trek VI treats the characters horribly - Uhura doesn't know Klingon, McCoy doesn't know Klingon anatomy and Kirk's suddenly racist against Klingons despite ending the previous film drinking with them.
